Charrería: Exploring the Human–Horse Connection in Mexican Rodeo
Center of the American West — Boulder, Colorado
This solo exhibition presented a selection of black-and-white and color photographs drawn from Chris Sessions’ long-form documentary project Charros de Colorado. Created over more than a decade, the work documents Colorado-based charros and charras as they compete in charreadas across the United States and Mexico.
From the precision of lasso work to the synchronized skirmish techniques of the escaramuzas, the photographs explore the extraordinary relationship between horse and rider—where athleticism, ceremony, and trust converge. Shown at both intimate and monumental scales, the exhibition invited viewers to engage with a living tradition that continues to evolve in today’s American West.
