About the Project
Charrería is the national sport of Mexico, combining equestrian skill, ceremony, and tradition, with origins dating back to the 14th century, and is practiced by communities throughout the American West.
Charros de Colorado is a long-form documentary project by photographer and filmmaker Chris Sessions, developed over more than a decade through sustained relationships within Colorado’s Charrería community. The work reflects years of invitation, access, and return—documenting the sport as it is practiced today while honoring its deep cultural history and living tradition.
Developed between 2011–present, the project brings together photography and film created across Colorado, California, and Mexico, with the aim of preserving a living history and reflecting the athleticism, ceremony, and sense of belonging that carry this tradition forward.
About the Artist
Chris Sessions is an award-winning photographer and filmmaker based in Boulder, Colorado. Alongside directing and shooting commercial advertising campaigns for regional and national clients, he develops immersive, long-form documentary projects rooted in the landscapes and communities of the American West. He is drawn to traditions that endure and to quieter moments that reveal how people relate to place, history, and one another. His photographs are held in private collections, and his films have received grant support in recognition of their cultural and artistic significance.
His photographic work has been presented as large-scale public installations throughout Colorado as part of The Big Picture, while his short films—including La Familia Charra and Charros de Colorado—have been presented through immersive experiences in unconventional spaces. Screenings and installations have taken place at outdoor festivals, museums, and community venues, including a 100-foot-wide projection on a turn-of-the-century grain elevator, installations on the outdoor walls of the History Colorado Center, walls on the outskirts of town, and a historic drive-in theater.
Charrería: Exploring the Human–Horse Connection in Mexican Rodeo was presented as a solo exhibition at the Center of the American West, where Chris curated a series of interactive public events, including a horse-led parade through the University of Colorado campus.
Working across still and moving image, Chris approaches each project with patience and presence, allowing trust, access, and repeated return to shape the work. Outside of photography and film, he skateboards, composes ambient electronic music, and spends time exploring back roads and swimming holes with his wife and two dogs.
