Charros de Colorado

A photographic record of Charrería as practiced in the American West

Charros de Colorado is a long-term documentary project focused on Charrería as it is practiced by communities across Colorado. I was introduced to Charrería, the national sport of Mexico, while documenting long-standing traditions at county fairs throughout the state. What began as a project about small-town communities gradually led me into a growing Charrería community practicing a sport I knew little about. Over time—and through persistence, trust, and invitation—I was welcomed by families who allowed me access to private events and competitions. For over a decade, I have attended over a hundred charreadas across Colorado, as well as in California and Mexico, creating photographs made on location that aim to preserve a living history and reflect the athleticism, ceremony, and sense of belonging that carry this timeless tradition forward.
