Charros de Colorado
A photographic record of Charrería as practiced in the American West
Charros de Colorado is a long-form documentary project focused on Charrería as it is practiced by communities across Colorado. I was introduced to Charrería, the national sport of Mexico, while documenting long-standing traditions at county fairs throughout the state. What began as a project centered on small-town communities gradually led me into a growing Charrería community practicing a sport I knew little about. Over time—through persistence, trust, and invitation—I was welcomed by families who opened their private events and competitions to me. For over a decade, I have attended over a hundred charreadas across Colorado, as well as in California and Mexico, with the aim of preserving a living history and reflecting the athleticism, ceremony, and sense of belonging that carry this timeless tradition forward.
